Understanding Neurodiversity

Not sure what these words mean? Here's a simple breakdown to help you understand the difference between neurodiverse, neurodivergent, and neurotypical.

What is Neurodiverse?

Neurodiverse refers to the natural variation of human brains. Every person in the world is part of a neurodiverse group because no two brains work in exactly the same way. It reflects the beautiful diversity of all minds — neurodivergent and neurotypical alike.

What is Neurodivergent?

Neurodivergent describes an individual whose brain functions differently from what is typically expected in society. This includes: Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, OCD, Tourette's Syndrome, and Tic Disorders.

Some individuals experience more than one of these — known as co-occurring (or co-morbid) conditions. Not everyone is formally diagnosed, but all neurodivergent experiences are valid.

What is Neurotypical?

Neurotypical describes someone whose brain functions in a way that fits with what society expects as “typical.” Neurotypical people may be friends, family members, educators, or allies — and are an important part of creating inclusive communities.
